Hands-on Training is Key for Cosmetology School

Cosmetology at Colleen O’Hara’s Beauty Academy

One of the reasons our students choose to attend Colleen O’Hara Beauty Academy (COBA) is because of the variety of ways we instruct our students. In our cosmetology program, we include solid technical foundation in the curriculum along with a certain amount of practical, hands-on instruction. Find out how our programs break down, including hands-on learning.

The Breakdown

Of the 1600 hours required to graduate from our cosmetology class, 270 hours are classroom instruction with the remaining hours focused in practical application. Cosmetology school at COBA is a very comprehensive course of study. We cover hair, color, customer service and business basics, as well as nails and makeup application. Students work with their instructors in a professional student salon* setting. They continuously practice how to cut and style hair. These skills may range from simple trims, layered cuts, and bobs to more complex hairstyles for weddings and special events. They also learn how to give manicuring and pedicure services, perform makeovers, and some skincare treatments.

Seeking Specialized Training in Makeup?

If you seek more specialized training to become a makeup artist in Orange County, we recommend our makeup program. This course is 600 hours of study and could be completed in as little as six months (as compared to the average 10 months needed to complete the cosmetology course.) In the makeup artistry program, hands-on instruction is key to helping our students get the feel for applying makeup. Our students learn color theory and the anatomy of the face. They also get instruction in makeup for everyday wear and formal looks. They practice learning makeup application and creations for women, men, and even teens. There are modules in this course for special event makeup, runway makeup, and glamour shots. The instructors in this program are all licensed professionals with lots of experience in their fields so our students can feel confident about what they are learning.
