Hair Classes: Hairstylist and Barber Certification in Orange County

So you’re a talented, unique, creative and ambitious graduate or simply in search of finally following your dreams and immersing yourself in an exciting new career as a hair dresser, barber, hairstylist or colorist. You know you’ve got what it takes creatively and there’s no one standing in your way as far as your motivation is concerned. But before you start and give it 100% of your blood, sweat and tears, you need to know what your options are: where do you begin, what courses and certification are offered, what beauty school do you attend and most importantly, how long is this all going to take before you’re working at your favorite salon or freelancing as a stylist or own your own barber shop?

In California, it’s laid out very clear by the governing body that resides over cosmetologists, The Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (part of the CA Department of Consumer Affairs). While the basic hours and course study for barbers and hairstylists are different, their fundamentals and principles remain the same. Your first step in deciding which field of beauty you want to pursue is doing your research. Some initial questions you should ask are:

  • Is the Orange County beauty academy accredited and approved by any state or national organizations? If so, what state and national accreditations does it hold?
  • How long has the cosmetology school been in business?
  • Is the beauty school centrally located and convenient to your home in Orange County?
  • What cosmetology courses does the beauty school offer?
  • Are the school’s facilities updated and clean? How big is the campus?
  • What are the class sizes like – do they offer an intimate and one-on-one learning experience?
  • Do you get to work with real cosmetology clients in an actual hands-on salon setting?
  • What is the school and faculty’s reputation within the cosmetology and beauty industry?
  • Is there financial aid and grants available to help pay for your cosmetology school tuition?

After you’ve done your research, the next step would be scheduling a meeting with a knowledgeable beauty school advisor and scheduling a tour of the campus. On your tour, pay close attention to the size of the facility, how clean it is and how safe you feel while there. Does there seem to be a working-synergy between the students, staff and clients? Are the facilities large or do they make you feel cramped? Are you able to view several different courses of cosmetology fields while there, in order to help you choose the right beauty career path for you? For instance, are you able to sit-in or view a class for Barbering or Barber Crossovers as well as classes for Hair Stylists, Colorists and Hair Dressers? Does the school have new equipment and the technology and product knowledge to assist you in furthering your cosmetology career?

The CA state pass-score minimum is set at a 75% percent and the state exam is comprised of 2 parts:

  • First there’s the Written Test: The written portion of the exam may be based on subjects such as chemical services, highlights, scientific and basic concepts, hair-designing and other physical services.
  • Second, you have the Practical Exam: For this portion, cosmetology students may be asked to demonstrate day-to-day beauty processes such as chemical relaxing, hair lightening (or bleaching), hair coloring, hair-shaping, thermal curling, chemical waving and blow-dry styling.
  • As a side-note and industry tip, cosmetology students should make certain that they choose a licensed beauty school in Orange County that offers continuing studies, because even after becoming a licensed professional they will need to complete periodical renewal courses in order to keep their license and skills active and up-to-date.
  • Colleen O’Hara’s Beauty Academy in Orange County offers both Barbering and Barber Crossover courses alongside their other cosmetology courses such as hairdresser, hairstylist and color specialist (colorist). Since today’s beauty consumers are more skeptical about the businesses they hire and people they work with it’s important to get your beauty school diploma and to get licensed in the field of study you wish to pursue. We not only instill the career knowledge and experience into our students, but we work hard to make sure they are well-rounded cosmetology school graduates – ones who display professionalism and can educate their clients on products and before making cut/color decisions.

At Colleen O’Hara’s Beauty Academy, we know that prospective clients are more likely to hire the services of a barber or cosmetologist who has proven to be educated has real-world cosmetology experience. While these hands-on barber and hairstylist skills are hard to come by, we offer them as part of our curriculum. We also work with our students so that they understand basic bookkeeping and accounting as well as customer service – both before and after the initial transaction. We feel that these are very important skills to have alongside your cosmetology license, especially if you intend to start your own business or work as a freelance cosmetologist.

If you plan on working at a salon or managing one, it’s a well-known industry fact that the same traits are highly-valued by prospective employers who want to staff their business with the best barbers and cosmetologists they can attract and afford. If you have the desire to build a longstanding relationship with a well-known and stable salon or spa as a cosmetologist, stylist, colorist or barber, your qualifications, experience and professionalism is what is guaranteed to make you stand out from the crowd.
